01. Who is this course for?
This one-year GCSE Maths course will prepare you for the AQA GCSE Mathematics 8300 qualification. It has 87 guided learning hours which equates to approximately 33 weeks.
Whilst on the course, you’ll study: Number; Algebra; Ratio, proportion and rates of change; Geometry and measures; and Probability and Statistics.
At the end of the course, you’ll sit three exams – two calculator and one non-calculator paper. It sounds daunting, but our intensive course is designed to help you cover all topic areas!
You’ll be equipped with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to develop your confidence in applying maths to tackle everyday problems; and to gain a nationally recognized qualification.
You’ll also be well-prepared for more advanced study of maths; to improve your career prospects; or to study for other academic qualifications.
Please note that the course will be taught with the aim of attaining a 4 to 6 grade.
For those wishing to attain grades 7 to 9, more independent learning at home will be expected, with some support from the tutor.
This year, our GCSE classes are offered either in class or online.

02. What will I learn?
Number: decimals, percentages, fractions and ratios
Statistics: data collection and analysis, tables, charts and graphs, probability
Geometry: metric measure, areas, volumes, symmetry, trigonometry

03. How will I learn?
You will learn by attending weekly lessons where you will have taught delivery, discussions and hands on activities to consolidate learning. Your progress and achievements will be recognized and recorded throughout your course in a number of ways. For example:
Practical tasks and assessments
Mock exams with feedback and predicted grades twice a year
Written and verbal feedback from your tutor
Learner feedback
To support your learning, you will have access to: BKSB, GoLearn Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle). Plus, if you are studying maths, you will also have access to MathsWatch and MyMaths.
If studying online, you will be provided with a Microsoft 365 Education account which you will use to access GoLearn VLE (Moodle), MathsWatch and MyMaths (if studying maths).

04. What will I need to bring?
A folder to store handouts and notes and a pen and pencil.
A scientific calculator and geometry equipment and a GCSE course book and/or access to the internet for independent study would be beneficial. For distance/blended learning, you will need at least: a laptop/PC or tablet computer; internet connection and a smartphone plus basic technical skills to use the equipment.

05. What skills or experience do I need?
A recent Functional Skills qualification at Level 2 is desirable but not essential. You will be asked to complete a GCSE questionnaire/assessment to ensure you have the base skills to build upon. You will be booked in for a phone conversation and remote assessment initially with a ‘Skills for Life’ Coordinator. You’ll receive advice about the best course for you, and then you’ll be enrolled onto a suitable course. You do need to attend regularly, for at least 80% of sessions.

06. How will I be assessed?
AQA Mathematics GCSE 8300. Please note that you will have to travel to one of our venues to take exams at the end of the course. the dates of exams are set by the education and regulation board, not by ourselves so there is no flexibility on dates and times.

07. What could I do after this course?
The course will prepare you for further and higher education.
It can lead to advancing in employment too as well as a career change.
We have information and guidance officers who can help advise on next steps.

08. How will I be supported in my learning?
We aim to support all learners to succeed. Our tutors will work with all learners to meet individual needs by using a range of resources and teaching methods.
When you enrol on your course you will be asked if you have any additional learning needs or disabilities which may affect your learning. This might include physical disabilities, neurodivergent needs (e.g., Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia, etc.), visual and auditory impairments, or a medical condition which might affect your learning. Your tutor will contact you prior to joining the course to discuss what support can be put in place.
For some learners, this may mean organising extra time in exams or arranging for a Learning Support Assistant to support your learning in class. We also offer a wide range of assistive technology such as reader pens, screen readers, large print keyboards and screens, alongside in-class resources such as coloured overlays, large-print resources and more.

09. Is help available with course fees?
Many of our courses are FREE to all learners. For fee-paying courses, if you are in receipt of state benefits or have a low income (£26,211.90 before deductions) you could be entitled to enrol on your course for FREE, or at a 70% Reduced Fee cost. If your course is accredited (working towards a formal qualification) your course may be FREE if you earn under £25,000 before deductions. Some exclusions apply, eligibility for fee reduction is subject to change, and you may be required to provide evidence of earnings.
If the amount you must pay for your course is over £50, we offer instalment plans which break down the cost of learning into a set number of easy monthly payments.
