More information about this Course

01. Who is this course for?
The Level 3 Certificate in Digital Skills (ICDL Advanced) allows you to build on existing digital knowledge and become an expert user of software applications that are essential in business today. The course starts Sept 2024 and ends Feb 2026. All learners will need to complete an initial assessment and attend an interview prior to enrolment on the course.

02. What will I learn?
This Level 3 Certificate covers a range of digital skills at an advanced level using Microsoft Office – Word Processing, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and Access databases with these skills then being applied to realistic scenarios within the final module Improving Productivity. It is delivered as a weekly 2.5-hour classroom session with further compulsory independent study each week. A blended learning option is available for suitable candidates.

03. How will I learn?
This qualification is a combination of tutor-led and independent study. You will learn by working through online resources, watching demonstrations by your tutor, completing exercises and online diagnostic assessments. You will have access to online resources and must be able to carry out independent study away from the classroom each week. Your tutor will set targets to enable you to achieve the qualification and will provide you with regular feedback against these targets.

04. What will I need to bring?
We recommend you bring materials like paper and pens to help you take notes and a memory stick to save your work. All Leicestershire Libraries offer FREE public WiFi and spaces to study if you do not have an appropriate space at home. If you have a PC or laptop but do not have Microsoft Office, we can provide access to the software to support home study. This course cannot be completed using a mobile device such as a phone or tablet. You will be required to bring ID to be eligible for the course.

05. What skills or experience do I need?
You need a recent Level 2 Digital Skills qualification or equivalent knowledge. This is an advanced qualification, equivalent to an A-level, so you must be able to work independently and on your own initiative. Some of the course content will be completed away from the classroom in the form of tutor-directed home study. Good attendance is required throughout to achieve this Level 3 qualification. You also need a good standard of English language, reading and writing to attend this course.

06. How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed via an online exam at the end of each unit. There are 5 units in total. The exams are marked electronically and you will receive your results immediately at the end of each exam. If you successfully complete all 5 units, you will achieve the “BCS Level 3 Certificate in IT User Skills (ICDL Advanced)”.

07. What could I do after this course?
This qualification carries 24 UCAS points to aid entry into university. Alternatively, you may prefer one of our specialist digital skills courses: Website Development (Using WordPress) or Photo Editing Techniques. We also offer a range of other courses: Learning for Wellbeing, including Arts and Leisure Languages, British Sign Language, ESOL Maths/English Employability, including compliance Apprenticeships and Traineeships Family Learning Programmes for Adults with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities

08. How will I be supported in my learning?
We aim to support all learners to succeed. Our tutors will work with all learners to meet individual needs by using a range of resources and teaching methods. When you enrol on your course you will be asked if you have any additional learning needs or disabilities which may affect your learning. This might include physical disabilities, neurodivergent needs (e.g., Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia, etc.), visual and auditory impairments, or a medical condition which might affect your learning. Your tutor will contact you prior to joining the course to discuss what support can be put in place. For some learners, this may mean organising extra time in exams or arranging for a Learning Support Assistant to support your learning in class. We also offer a wide range of assistive technology such as reader pens, screen readers, large print keyboards and screens, alongside in-class resources such as coloured overlays, large-print resources and more.

09. Is help available with course fees?
Many of our courses are FREE to all learners. For fee-paying courses, if you are in receipt of state benefits or have a low income (£26,211.90 before deductions) you could be entitled to enrol on your course for FREE, or at a 70% Reduced Fee cost. If your course is accredited (working towards a formal qualification) your course may be FREE if you earn under £25,000 before deductions. Some exclusions apply, eligibility for fee reduction is subject to change, and you may be required to provide evidence of earnings. If the amount you must pay for your course is over £50, we offer instalment plans which break down the cost of learning into a set number of easy monthly payments.
