More information about this Course
01. Who is this course for?
This course is designed to enable learners to improve their ability to communicate with d/Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of familiar contexts, participating in longer and more complex conversations than at Beginners BSL part 1.
This course builds on the same topics learned on BSL beginners part 1 course, but will add vocabulary and fluency. We will cover topics such as:
Everyday Conversation
Eating & Drinking
Shopping and work
Travel & Holidays
|
02. What will I learn?
you will improve your knowledge and skills, and develop functional communication in BSL about a range of real life, routine, and daily experiences enabling you to communicate better with BSL users.
|
03. How will I learn?
You will learn via class activities including group work, paired work and video work
you will get feedback from your tutor.
Practicing within your own time throughout the course will support you to successfully learn the language
|
04. What will I need to bring?
You may bring a pen and paper for your own notes (a minimal amount of writing is included in course as BSL is a visual language).
A computer/laptop/tablet/phone and an internet connection is useful to access moodle (our virtual learning environment) and for further study.
|
05. What skills or experience do I need?
This course follows on from our Beginners BSL part 1 course, but you don’t need to have completed that course to join this one. If you have successful recent study at a beginner level or have recent and regular contact with British sign language users and are confident with the basics you will have the skills to join this course. please get in touch if you aren't sure.
You will need access to a computer/laptop/tablet and an internet connection so that you can access resources and homework on moodle (our virtual learning environment).
|
06. How will I be assessed?
This course is not accredited and there is no exam, but we do film learners signing during the course to prove they have achieved the course aims.
Tutors give feedback on signs and other work during class, and observe class activities to ensure learners make progress.
Learners complete an individual learning plan to record and measure their own progress.
|
07. What could I do after this course?
You could attend BSL events such as BSL Cafes or Deaf pubs to met BSL users and practise with them.
You can also look into achieving your BSL level 1 (this is an accredited course with exams) with other providers.
|
08. How will I be supported in my learning?
We aim to support all learners to succeed. Our tutors will work with all learners to meet individual needs by using a range of resources and teaching methods.
When you enrol on your course you will be asked if you have any additional learning needs or disabilities which may affect your learning. This might include physical disabilities, neurodivergent needs (e.g., Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia, etc.), visual and auditory impairments, or a medical condition which might affect your learning. Your tutor will contact you prior to joining the course to discuss what support can be put in place.
For some learners, this may mean organising extra time in exams or arranging for a Learning Support Assistant to support your learning in class. We also offer a wide range of assistive technology such as reader pens, screen readers, large print keyboards and screens, alongside in-class resources such as coloured overlays, large-print resources and more.
