More information about this Course

01. Who is this course for?
This is an eight week course designed for complete beginners to the language. It is the first of a two part course for beginners and will give you a taste of the language you want to learn. You will be introduced to a range of basic phrases that you will be able to use in practical situations for introducing yourself and others; giving your address and nationality; numbers; ordering food and drinks. The emphasis will be on having fun and speaking the language through activities and games. The 8 sessions will encourage you and give you the confidence to “have a go”. You will also discover a little about the country/ countries that speak the language and its' people.

02. What will I learn?
You will learn a range of basic words and phrases - covering topics such as: How to exchange greetings, introducing yourself and others, sharing information about yourself and others, numbers, ordering food & drink in cafés/restaurants

03. How will I learn?
You will learn through practical class activities, including group & paired work and role play and other games. We assess learners via on-going assessment of learning by you and your tutor.

04. What will I need to bring?
Pen/pencil, paper for notes. Please bring any vocabulary or worksheets you are given to each class.

05. What skills or experience do I need?
No language experience necessary at all - just enthusiasm to have a go! You need a willingness to practice words and phrases in between lessons, and a sense of humour! A certain amount of time for self-study outside the class is recommended to progress steadily each week. Enrolment on the course includes access to our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) known as Moodle. Lesson resources will be uploaded to our VLE with a variety of different activities to support your learning in between classes.

06. How will I be assessed?
There are no exams or tests on this course- but you will keep a folder of work during the course with handouts, class work and homework to show your progress. You will also complete a document called an ILP (individual Learning plan) that will help you to record and measure your progress.

07. What could I do after this course?
After the 8 week taster - there is a follow on course of 20 weeks - the year 1 'Moving on' course. This course will really get you started with your chosen language and help you to develop your skills. Many learners sign up to both the 8 week taster and the 20 week 'Moving on' course at the same time to avoid disappointment!

08. How will I be supported in my learning?
We aim to support all learners to succeed. Our tutors will work with all learners to meet individual needs by using a range of resources and teaching methods. When you enrol on your course you will be asked if you have any additional learning needs or disabilities which may affect your learning. This might include physical disabilities, neurodivergent needs (e.g., Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia, etc.), visual and auditory impairments, or a medical condition which might affect your learning. Your tutor will contact you prior to joining the course to discuss what support can be put in place. For some learners, this may mean organising extra time in exams or arranging for a Learning Support Assistant to support your learning in class. We also offer a wide range of assistive technology such as reader pens, screen readers, large print keyboards and screens, alongside in-class resources such as coloured overlays, large-print resources and more.

09. Is help available with course fees?
Many of our courses are FREE to all learners. For fee-paying courses, if you are in receipt of state benefits or have a low income (£26,211.90 before deductions) you could be entitled to enrol on your course for FREE, or at a 70% Reduced Fee cost. If your course is accredited (working towards a formal qualification) your course may be FREE if you earn under £25,000 before deductions. Some exclusions apply, eligibility for fee reduction is subject to change, and you may be required to provide evidence of earnings. If the amount you must pay for your course is over £50, we offer instalment plans which break down the cost of learning into a set number of easy monthly payments. If you need help with the wider costs of study, such as childcare, resources, travel, and transport costs, you may be eligible to have these costs reimbursed through our Discretionary Learner Support Fund. Visit us online for more details, and to download the online application form.
