01. Who is this course for?
This course is designed to build upon the knowledge from the Introduction to Novel Writing Course and help individuals make real progress on their novel. This course supports fledgling writers who have a story in mind and have made a start on their story and puzzling as to how they will keep up momentum for the next three hundred pages. It is very common for a writer to go through a slump when the shiny new idea becomes their work in progress.

02. What will I learn?
How to identify a story’s dynamic plot points, story beats and plot holes helping to maximise a story’s impact on the reader. Developing a plot into a story and scaffolding it around the three-act-structure to ensure the story doesn’t run out of steam at the forty-percent mark. While the character deep-dive aids character development, interiority and motivations and stakes. Dynamic dialogue is a vital element of novel writing which can be further developed by incorporating physicality, obstacles and interior monologue to character’s conversations.

03. How will I learn?
This online course will cover a different writing topic each week and provide further development activities for learners to work on outside of the lesson. Each learner will be provided with an activity book where they are expected to reflect on their writing practices within their learner diary and individual learning plan. They will have access to all the learning resources provided in class as well as the development activity resources. Learners will receive verbal feedback from your tutor and classmates as well as written feedback from their tutor.

04. What will I need to bring?
This is an online course, you will need access to a laptop or PC, a reliable internet connection with video and audio capabilities or a headset; and be a competent user of IT. Smartphones or tablets are not suitable devices to use when studying this course. Pen, pencil, paper or notepad and a folder to store your work.

05. What skills or experience do I need?
To get the most out of the Next Steps in Novel Writing course learners should ideally have made a start on their story or at least have a strong story idea they are willing to work on and develop and have completed an introduction to novel writing course.

06. How will I be assessed?
The Learning for Wellbeing curriculum uses formative and summative assessment methods to evaluate learner progress. You will work towards completing learning targets set in class, as well as your own personal development targets. Targets are reviewed at the middle and end of the course. Informal discussions and critiques with the tutor and learners will take place throughout the course, both individually and in groups.

07. What could I do after this course?

08. How will I be supported in my learning?
We aim to support all learners to succeed. When you enrol on your course you will be asked if you have any learning difficulties and/or disabilities which may affect your learning. This might include physical disabilities, neurodivergent needs (e.g., Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia, etc.), visual and auditory impairments, or a medical condition which might affect your learning. Your tutor will contact you prior to joining the course to discuss what support can be put in place.

09. Is help available with course fees?
