01. Who is this course for?
This course is for beginners to the language. It is a 28 week course where you will be introduced to a range of basic everyday language that can be used in a variety of settings e.g. holiday, social and work. The course is enjoyable and relaxed, using a variety of learning materials, such as practical activities, games and interactive websites. The main emphasis will be on learning to speak and understand simple phrases. The sessions will cover how to cope in a variety of situations you might find yourself in when visiting a country where they speak your chosen language. You will also discover a little about the culture, the country and its people

02. What will I learn?
You will learn a range of basic words and phrases - covering topics such as:
How to exchange greetings, introducing yourself and sharing information about yourself and others, ordering food & drink in cafés/restaurants, asking for / understanding place names & simple directions, saying where you live, booking accommodation, buying travel tickets, plus other practical skills such as the use of numbers and asking about prices.

03. How will I learn?
Your progress and achievements will be recognised and recorded throughout your course in a number of ways. For example: Regular dialogue with your tutor, class activities including group work, paired work, role play and language games and quizzes. You will also complete spoken and/or written exercises and gain feedback on these from your tutor.

04. What will I need to bring?
Please bring a pen/pencil and paper for notes. You will be given an A4 folder to store handouts, notes, vocabulary and worksheets so please bring this with you to class each week! Details of course materials you may wish to purchase will be given at the first session. A dictionary could be useful but is not essential – please talk to your tutor.

05. What skills or experience do I need?
None! just a desire to learn and a willingness to have a go. You need to be able to practise words and phrases in between lessons in order to help your learning- a small amount of time for self-study and homework outside the class is recommended to progress steadily each week.

06. How will I be assessed?
This course is assessed and accredited with SEG Language Awards, so you will receive a certificate at the end if you have good attendance to class and complete all tasks.
Assessment is through tasks completed in class and as part of homework.

07. What could I do after this course?
After this 'Beginners - Year 1' course you can progress on to our 'Elementary - Year 2' which will continue your learning and knowledge of the language and help you to improve.

08. How will I be supported in my learning?
We aim to support all learners to succeed. Our tutors will work with all learners to meet individual needs by using a range of resources and teaching methods. When you enrol on your course you will be asked if you have any additional learning needs or disabilities which may affect your learning. This might include physical disabilities, neurodivergent needs (e.g., Autistic Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia, etc.), visual and auditory disabilities or differences, or a medical condition which might affect your learning. Your tutor will contact you prior to joining the course to discuss what support can be put in place. For some learners, this may mean organising extra time in exams or arranging for a Learning Support Assistant to support your learning in class. We also offer a wide range of assistive technology such as reader pens, screen readers, large print keyboards and screens, alongside in-class resources such as coloured overlays, large-print resources and more.

09. Is help available with course fees?
Many of our courses are FREE to all learners. Your course may be FREE if you are unemployed or earn under £26,800 before deductions. If you are in receipt of state benefits or have a low income (£28,733.50 before deductions) you could be entitled to enrol on your course at a 70% reduced fee cost. Some exclusions apply, eligibility for fee reduction is subject to change, and you may be required to provide evidence of earnings. If the amount you must pay for your course is over £50, we offer instalment plans which break down the cost of learning into a set number of easy monthly payments. If you need help with the wider costs of study, such as childcare, resources, travel, and transport costs, you may be eligible to have these costs reimbursed through our Discretionary Learner Support Fund.
