01. Who is this course for?
PLEASE NOTE: We would prefer that you do not wear face coverings during these sessions, as tutors are deaf and need to lip-read in order to communicate with you. This course is designed to enable complete beginners to British Sign Language to develop an ability to communicate with deaf people using BSL in a range of familiar contexts. The course consists of topics such as: Meeting and greeting people • Understand and produce finger spelling • Use and recognise simple question forms • Numbers • Transport and directions • Vocabulary around home life such as people, animals and objects, numbers, age, time, money and calendar • Interests and activities • The weather

02. What will I learn?
• To enable learners to communicate with deaf people in BSL on a range of topics using simple, everyday language. • To gain a knowledge of BSL vocabulary. • To understand how other elements besides hand shapes create sign language • To develop some knowledge of signing structures and BSL word order

03. How will I learn?
• Class activities including group, paired work and video work • Visual and written feedback from your tutor

04. What will I need to bring?
Pen and paper for your own notes (minimal amount of writing included in course). BSL is a visual language. Laptop/computer/tablet/ phone and internet connection in order to access resources and Moodle

05. What skills or experience do I need?
No formal qualifications or previous experience required, just an interest in BSL and the deaf community and a willingness to have a go! You will need internet access and a computer/laptop/tablet or phone in order to access the online learning platform - for resources and homework.

06. How will I be assessed?
This course is not accredited and there is no exam, but there will be recorded assessments. Learners will need to complete an individual learning plan to record progress.
