01. Who is this course for?
You will work with your tutor to develop an Individual Learning Plan based on your interests and needs. The course will help you to develop confidence to develop confidence in the use of fundamental mathematical knowledge and skills to solve mathematical problems or carry out tasks in everyday practical contexts and the world of work. You will work and study for a certificate in Functional Skills Maths at a level that suits you. You will study and develop maths skills in different areas including number and ratios (whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages); measures, shape and space (perimeter, area and volume calculations, unit conversion for length, weight/mass and capacity); and handling information and data (averages, range, charts and graphs). The course activities and materials will link to everyday life and work experiences. Entry Level courses are 2-hours long and delivered in a classroom over 30 weeks. They are daytime courses (morning or afternoon). You will be entered for the assessments when you are ready. Entry Level assessments take place in class time. Level 1 and 2 courses are 2.5 hours long and delivered either in a classroom or online over 24 weeks, with the exam taken after the final session. At Level 1 and Level 2, there are courses available at daytime (morning or afternoon) and evenings. All Level 1 and Level 2 learners on classroom and online courses will be required to attend one of our centres to take exams. Functional Skills maths qualifications are recognised by employers and a Level 2 qualification. In many cases, educational providers (colleges and other academic institutions like universities) and employers consider Functional Skills Level 2 equivalent to GCSEs. Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths has parity with GCSE Maths at Grade 4 (Grade C) Foundation. The course follows the Department for Education subject content for functional skills mathematics Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2.

02. What will I learn?
The Functional Skills Maths course leads to a qualification for work, study and life in general. It develops the mathematical skills you need to solve problems in the workplace and to help you with everyday tasks like shopping, personal finance, DIY, helping children with homework and other real-life situations. There is an emphasis on problem solving and mathematical thinking. Topics include: • Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division • Percentages, decimals and fractions • Metric measuring and conversion • Shapes and Angles• Perimeter, Area and Volume • Formulae • Graphs and Charts • Statistics and Probability. The content covered is based on the skills level (Entry 1, 2 and 3; Level 1 and 2) the learner is working towards.

03. How will I learn?
Learners who regularly attend lessons and complete homework have the greatest success rates. Your progress and achievements will be recognised and recorded regularly in a number of ways. For example: being able to apply your skills in everyday life; achievement of targets in your individual learning plan; feedback from your tutor on homework, work in class, skills checks and other forms of continuous assessment.

04. What will I need to bring?
Pen, pencil, paper or notepad and a folder to store your work. Also, maths instruments as specified by your tutor once the course starts, including a calculator and a ruler. For online courses, you will need a laptop/PC or tablet computer, a good internet connection with video/audio capabilities or a headset; and be a competent user of IT. Smartphones are not suitable devices to use to study these courses.

05. What skills or experience do I need?
You must complete an assessment to establish the level you are working towards and attend a meeting with a member of the Skills for Life team to discuss your individual needs and the course appropriate for you. You must attend lessons regularly. There is an expectation of at least 95% attendance.

06. How will I be assessed?
Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills qualification in mathematics at Entry Levels 1, 2 and 3; Levels 1 and 2. To achieve the qualification at each level, learners have to sit and pass a live assessment, which comprises two sections a non-calculator and a calculator section.
